Stan Humphries led San Diego to Super Bowl XXIX

Stan Humphries was born on April 14, 1965, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He signed with LSU out of Southwood High School, transferred to Northeast Louisiana, and won the 1987 Division I-AA national championship there. Washington drafted him in the sixth round of the 1988 draft, 159th overall. He made five starts in 1990 with Mark Rypien injured and was on the roster for the 1991 season that ended in a Super Bowl XXVI win.

Washington traded him to San Diego before the 1992 season after John Friesz was hurt. Humphries threw for 3,356 yards and the Chargers recovered from an 0-4 start to finish 11-5, a season Madden NFL 93 graded at a calculated 33. San Diego won the AFC Championship Game 17-13 at Pittsburgh on January 15, 1995, then lost Super Bowl XXIX to San Francisco 49-26, with Humphries completing 24 of 49 passes for 275 yards; Madden NFL 95 had him at a calculated 78 for 1994.

The Chargers returned to the playoffs after the 1995 season, for which Madden NFL 96 listed a calculated 86. A series of concussions ended his playing career during the 1997 season. He went 50-31 as a starter and finished with 17,191 passing yards, 89 touchdowns and 84 interceptions, and the Chargers inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2002.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
