A glitchy 94, and a better second career on the sideline

Frank Pollack was a sixth-round tackle out of Northern Arizona who spent two separate stints in San Francisco across the 1990s, a swing lineman and occasional starter who won a Super Bowl ring on the 1994 team. He was a dependable, low-drama body a line needs on the bench, the sort who starts a dozen games when injuries hit and disappears back into the rotation when everyone is healthy.

Madden's grades for him are noisy in the usual way. His best card was a 94 for the 1994 season, inflated by a 99 awareness rating that looks like a data artifact rather than a real evaluation, and his other numbers sat much lower, a 59 and a 67, the honest range for a reserve lineman. The 94 is a glitch; the high-50s and 60s are the player.

Pollack, like more than one lineman on this roster, found his real calling as a coach. He became a respected NFL offensive line coach, running fronts for the Cowboys, Bengals and others across more than a decade on the sideline. The player was a rotational tackle with a ring. The coach shaped some of the better running games in the league, which is the more lasting legacy of the two.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
