Derek Loville was born on July 4, 1968 in San Francisco, played college football at Oregon, and entered the NFL undrafted in 1990, making the Seattle Seahawks roster. He carried seven times as a rookie and 22 times in 1991, then spent two seasons out of the league. San Francisco signed him for 1994, and he ran 31 times for 99 yards as a reserve on the team that won Super Bowl XXIX; Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 90 for that season.

Loville started all 16 games in 1995 and led the 49ers in rushing with 723 yards and 10 touchdowns on 218 carries, adding 87 receptions for 662 yards. Madden NFL 96 put him at a calculated 76 for that season, below the figure it had given him as a backup. His workload dropped to 70 carries in 12 games in 1996, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at a stored 26 for that year.

He signed with Denver in 1997 and spent three seasons behind Terrell Davis, winning Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII. Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 80 for the 1999 season, in which he ran for 203 yards in 10 games. Loville played his final NFL game that year and finished with 1,620 rushing yards, 16 rushing touchdowns and 120 receptions for 915 yards.
