Bart Oates earned a law degree while he was starting at center in the NFL, which tells you something about the man. He came up through the USFL with the Philadelphia and Baltimore Stars, winning two titles there, then anchored the Giants' offensive line for nine years and two Super Bowls, XXI and XXV, before joining San Francisco in 1994 as a savvy veteran to snap for one more champion.

Madden's grades track the move but not the player. Oates declined on paper through his last Giants years, a 73, a 63, a 46, the numbers of an aging lineman, and then jumped to a 90 the moment he put on a 49ers uniform in Madden NFL '95 for the 1994 season, a spike that owes more to the game's data than to any sudden renaissance.
