Gary Wayne Zimmerman was born on December 13, 1961 in Fullerton, California, and played at Oregon, where he was a first-team All-American in 1983. The Los Angeles Express of the USFL drafted him 36th overall in 1984, and he started all 17 games at left tackle that season and 17 more in 1985. The New York Giants held his NFL rights from the 1984 supplemental draft of USFL and CFL players.

Minnesota acquired those rights and Zimmerman played left tackle for the Vikings from 1986 through 1992. The Associated Press named him first-team All-Pro in 1987 and 1988. Madden NFL 92 carried a calculated 82 for the 1991 season, and Madden NFL 93 carried a calculated 92 for 1992, his last year in Minnesota.

He joined Denver in 1993 and started 16 games in each of his first three seasons there, with Madden NFL 96 listing a calculated 79 for 1995. The Associated Press made him first-team All-Pro again in 1996, one of seven seasons that ended in a Pro Bowl selection. Zimmerman won Super Bowl XXXII on January 25, 1998, when Denver beat Green Bay 31-24, and retired afterward. He was named to the NFL 1980s and 1990s All-Decade Teams and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on February 2, 2008.
