Alan Grant Madden Career 1992-1994 - Peak 46 OVR
A slight career, a more interesting second act with a byline
Alan Grant was a fourth-round cornerback out of Stanford, a defensive back and return man who spent a short journeyman career with the Colts, 49ers, Bengals and Washington. He played two seasons in San Francisco, in 1992 and 1993, a depth corner and kick returner on the edges of the roster.
Madden's two cards of him are as slight as the career: a 39 as a Colt and a 46 as a 49er, the low numbers of a backup the game barely tracked, with awareness ratings down in the 20s that tell you how little it knew about him. There was not much to grade, and the game did not pretend otherwise.
Grant intercepted three passes and returned kicks across five NFL seasons before moving on to a second act as a writer, penning football pieces and a memoir. He was a role player on the field, a name in small type on old rosters, and Madden's low grades are an accurate record of a corner who never quite stuck. The more interesting Alan Grant showed up later, with a byline instead of a number.
