A tenth-round starter on the Great Wall
John Gesek came out of Sacramento State, converted from defensive end to the offensive line, and turned a tenth-round pick from the Raiders in 1987 into a decade-long career as a dependable interior starter. He landed in Dallas in 1990 and started at guard on two Super Bowl champions, just the unheralded lineman a great offense needs alongside its stars.
Madden rated him a solid starter with one obvious glitch. Gesek sat in the 50s and 70s across his cards, then spiked to a 98 in Madden NFL 95 for the 1994 season, a number no scout would give a role-playing guard, exactly the data error that turns up on obscure linemen. The truer read was a competent starter in the 70s.
Gesek won Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII with Dallas before finishing his career in Washington. He was never a Pro Bowler, just a steady body on the Great Wall who did his job for years, precisely the player a line cannot function without and no one outside the building notices. Madden's phantom 98 says nothing; the two rings say enough.
