Gale Gilbert: The QB on Five Straight Super Bowl Teams

Gale Gilbert was born on December 20, 1961 in Red Bluff, California, played college football at California, and signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 1985. He appeared in nine games as a rookie, completing 19 of 40 passes for 218 yards, and stayed in Seattle through 1987.

Gilbert joined the Buffalo Bills in 1989 as the third quarterback behind Jim Kelly and Frank Reich, appearing in two games and attempting 15 passes over five seasons. Buffalo reached Super Bowls XXV, XXVI, XXVII and XXVIII in that span. He signed with San Diego in 1994, played 15 games with one start, and appeared briefly at the end of the Chargers' loss in Super Bowl XXIX, making him the only player to be a member of five consecutive Super Bowl teams. Madden NFL 95 carried a calculated 82 overall for that 1994 season.

He played all 16 games with one start in 1995, going 36 of 61 for 325 yards, and Madden NFL 96 listed a calculated 59 for the season. His career ended on December 31, 1995, when he did not play in San Diego's 35-20 wild-card loss to Indianapolis. He finished 146 of 259 for 1,544 yards with nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
