A number-two pick who became a reliable pro

Tony Casillas was a two-time All-American at Oklahoma, a Lombardi Award winner and a national champion, and the second overall pick in the 1986 draft. He never quite became the superstar that billing implied, but he had a long, useful career as a stout nose tackle, and his best years came in Dallas, in the middle of the Cowboys' championship defense.

Madden rated him a solid starter with the usual old-scale noise. Casillas peaked at an 82 in Madden NFL 94 for the 1993 season, built on a 92 tackle rating, the number of a good run-stuffer, and bounced into the 30s and 60s on his other cards, the erratic grades the game hands interior linemen. The 82 was the truest read: a dependable tackle who occupied blockers and let others make plays.

Casillas won two Super Bowls with Dallas, XXVII and XXVIII, across two separate stints with the team, with detours through Atlanta and the Jets in between. He retired after the 1997 season and later entered the College Football Hall of Fame for his Oklahoma days. Madden's 82 marks a good starter; the college accolades marked a great player who settled into being a reliable pro.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
