C.J. Goodwin Madden Career 2017-2026 - Peak 68 OVR

C.J. Goodwin took one of the strangest roads to a long NFL career. He played college basketball before switching to receiver at a Division II school, went undrafted, caught on with Pittsburgh on a Hall of Famer's recommendation, and got converted to cornerback in Atlanta. Then he found his true calling, special teams, and rode it to a remarkably long run.

The Madden card, which rates his cornerback play, cannot see what makes him valuable. It peaked at a 71 in Madden NFL 19 and otherwise sat in the 60s, the grade of a defensive back who barely plays defense, because the number weights coverage and Goodwin's job is running down the field on kicks. He led the Cowboys in special-teams tackles three straight years, a production the overall rating has no column for.

He has stuck in Dallas since 2018, a captain-level presence on coverage units into his mid-thirties, one of the longest-tenured players on the roster despite a thin defensive stat line. Goodwin is the patron saint of the special-teams ace, and his modest, coverage-based card is the clearest example on this roster of a rating missing the entire point of a player.
