Derwin James was born on August 3, 1996 in Haines City, Florida. He played three seasons at Florida State, and the Chargers drafted him 17th overall in 2018. He started all 16 games as a rookie, made 105 tackles and was named first-team All-Pro. Madden NFL 19 rated him 80 for that 2018 season.
A stress fracture in his foot limited him to five games in 2019. He tore a meniscus before the 2020 season and did not play that year. He returned to start 15 games in 2021, and Madden NFL 22 rated him 88 for that season. Madden NFL 23 rated him 93 for 2022, a year that ended in second-team All-Pro honors.
He started 16 games in 2023, and Madden NFL 24 rated him 95 for that season. He was named second-team All-Pro again after 2024 and after 2025, when he tied his career high with three interceptions. On May 28, 2026 he signed a three-year, $75.6 million extension with the Chargers.
