The immovable middle of the Legion of Boom

The Legion of Boom got the headlines, but Brandon Mebane did the work that let those safeties fly around. A third-round pick out of Cal in 2007, the nose tackle occupied blockers and shut down interior runs, and Richard Sherman marveled that he was rarely out of position, even chasing down screens near the sideline. He was a champion after Super Bowl XLVIII, when Seattle demolished Denver 43-8, and remained a Seahawk into 2015 before finishing his career in the Chargers' front.

In January 2019 his seven-week-old daughter Makenna died of a heart defect, and Mebane returned to play in the Chargers' playoff game days later. He retired in 2020 after 13 seasons. His Madden value grew as respect for his run defense did: a 74 in the 2007 edition as a rookie, rising to a career-high 91 in the 2014 game on the back of the Super Bowl season, before age slowly pulled the number down into the 70s by the 2019 edition.
