Ernie Sims was born on December 23, 1984 in Tallahassee, Florida, and played linebacker at Florida State, where he was a first-team All-American in 2004. The Detroit Lions took him ninth overall in the 2006 draft. He started all 16 games as a rookie, made 124 tackles and was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Madden NFL 07 rated him 83 for that season.
Detroit named him a team captain in September 2007, and he started every game for three straight years. Madden NFL 09 rated him 94 for the 2008 season. He played 11 games in 2009, his last in Detroit, and on April 19, 2010 the Lions traded him to Philadelphia in a three-team deal that sent Tony Scheffler from Denver to Detroit. Madden NFL 11 rated him 83 for his one season with the Eagles.
Sims signed with Indianapolis in August 2011 and played 13 games there, and Madden NFL 12 rated him 78 for that season. Dallas signed him in October 2012 after Sean Lee was injured, and he made 42 tackles in each of his two Cowboys seasons. Arizona released him in August 2014, and he later moved into coaching, joining the Florida State staff in 2024. He finished with 623 tackles, 5.5 sacks and one interception in 109 games.
