Jim Thorpe winner whose hands finally cooperated in San Francisco
Rogers arrived with pedigree, the ninth pick of the 2005 draft, a consensus All-American at Auburn and the 2004 Jim Thorpe Award winner as the nation's best defensive back. In Washington his coverage was tight and his hands were infamous; he dropped more catchable interceptions than almost any corner of his era, a running joke that trailed him for six seasons. The story changed in San Francisco. In 2011 he finally caught what came his way, leading the 49ers with six interceptions and earning a Pro Bowl nod plus second-team All-Pro honors.
He played three years for the 49ers, started in their Super Bowl XLVII loss to Baltimore, 34-31, and closed out with Oakland in 2014, retiring with 18 interceptions. Madden read the arc plainly: an 80 in the 2005 edition as a rookie, a climb into the high 80s, and a top mark of 91 in the 2012 edition, arriving the year after his hands stopped betraying him.
