Daryl Smith was born March 14, 1982 in Albany, Georgia, started 44 of 46 games at Georgia Tech, and was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second round, 39th overall, in 2004. He started 13 games as a rookie, and Madden NFL 05 listed him at 76 for that season. He returned a fumble 77 yards for a touchdown in 2007, a season for which Madden NFL 08 listed him at 88.

Smith recorded 107 tackles in 2009 and 97 in 2010, and on November 28, 2010 he passed Donovin Darius as the Jaguars' career tackles leader. He made 107 tackles again in 2011, and Madden NFL 12 listed him at 90 for that season. Injury limited him to two games in 2012, and he left Jacksonville after nine seasons.

He signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013, led the team with 123 tackles, and in December passed Ray Lewis's franchise mark for pass deflections by a linebacker. Madden NFL 25 listed him at 82 for that 2013 season. His five forced fumbles in 2014 tied for the NFL lead, and Madden NFL 16 listed him at 90 for 2015, when he made 121 tackles. He played 2016 with Tampa Bay and finished with 1,088 tackles, 30.5 sacks and 12 interceptions in 190 games.
