John Joseph Harrington was born on October 21, 1978, in Portland, Oregon, played college football at Oregon, and was selected third overall by the Detroit Lions in the 2002 NFL Draft. He won Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2001. He replaced Mike McMahon during a Week 1 loss as a rookie and made his first start in Week 3 against Green Bay, throwing for 182 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Madden NFL 03 listed him at 73 overall for that 2002 season.
Harrington started all 16 games in both 2003 and 2004, and his 2004 season produced career highs of 3,047 passing yards and 19 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. Madden NFL 05 rated him 83 overall for 2004. Detroit traded him to Miami in May 2006, where he started 11 games, and Madden NFL 07 carried him at 76 overall for that season. Atlanta signed him in April 2007 and he started 10 games, a season for which Madden NFL 08 again listed him at 76 overall.
He signed with New Orleans in 2008 but did not appear in a regular-season game, and he never played in the NFL again. Harrington finished with 14,693 passing yards and 79 touchdown passes over six seasons and was never selected to a Pro Bowl. He later worked as a football commentator and was inducted into the University of Oregon Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.
