Junior-college back who ran for 1,000 yards in two different uniforms
Reuben Droughns took the long road. He passed through Merced Junior College and Oregon before Detroit spent a third-round pick, 81st overall, on him in 2000. It took a trade to Denver and Mike Shanahan's zone scheme to unlock him. In 2004 he ran for 1,240 yards as a Bronco, then got dealt to Cleveland and did it again, 1,232 yards in 2005.
Those back-to-back thousand-yard seasons drove his Madden number. Droughns had been an afterthought at 61 in the 2001 edition and 71 in the 2004 game, but the breakout pushed him to 86 and then a peak 89 in Madden 2006. He finished his career in New York, blocking and spelling the backfield on the Giants team that won Super Bowl XLII over the unbeaten Patriots, and he was on the field for the final snap. His card slid to 80 and then 75 in those last two editions as the carries dried up.
