Shaun King: Tulane QB Who Started an NFC Title Game

Shaun King was born on May 29, 1977, in St. Petersburg, Florida, and played college football at Tulane, where he captained an undefeated 12-0 team in 1998 and set the then-record for single-season passing efficiency at 183.3. He finished tenth in the 1998 Heisman Trophy voting. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him in the second round of the 1999 NFL draft with the 50th pick.

King took over after Trent Dilfer broke his collarbone and made his first start on December 6, 1999, against Minnesota, winning four of his five starts as Tampa Bay took the NFC Central. He beat Washington 14-13 in the divisional round on January 15, 2000, then started the NFC Championship Game at St. Louis on January 23, 2000, the first rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl era to do so. He started all 16 games in 2000 and threw for 2,769 yards with 18 touchdowns, and Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 85 for that season.

Tampa Bay signed Brad Johnson in 2001, and King spent three seasons as a reserve. Madden NFL 02 listed him at 74 for 2001 and Madden NFL 03 at 68 for 2002. He dressed as the third quarterback for the Buccaneers' Super Bowl XXXVII win. He started two games for Arizona in 2004, a season Madden NFL 05 listed at 75, and later played in the Arena Football League. He finished with 4,566 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
