Ryan Leaf was born on May 15, 1976, in Great Falls, Montana, and played college football at Washington State, throwing for 3,968 yards and 34 touchdowns as a junior in 1997. The San Diego Chargers traded up to take him second overall in the 1998 draft, one pick after Peyton Manning. He won his first two starts, beginning with a 16-14 win over Buffalo in San Diego on September 6, 1998.

He completed one of 15 passes in a 23-7 loss to Kansas City on September 20, 1998, and finished the season with two touchdowns against 15 interceptions and a 39.0 passer rating. Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated 86 overall for 1998, derived from his listed attributes rather than his production. A shoulder injury in July 1999 cost him that season, and Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 74 for 2000, the year he went 1-8 as a starter.

San Diego released him on February 28, 2001. Tampa Bay claimed him two days later and cut him in September without a regular-season appearance. He then appeared in four games for Dallas, all losses, and Madden NFL 02 listed him at 60 for 2001. He signed with Seattle in May 2002 and retired at 26 before training camp, finishing with 317 completions in 655 attempts for 3,666 yards, 14 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. In 2012 he pleaded guilty in Montana to felony burglary and drug possession, and he was released from prison on December 3, 2014.
