Mike Salmon was born on December 27, 1970, and attended Greenway High School in Phoenix before enrolling at Southern California. He turned down an $80,000 offer from the Philadelphia Phillies to take the USC scholarship. He started at free safety, strong safety, cornerback and outside linebacker for the Trojans, served as a team captain, and also played baseball there.

Salmon handled placekicking on occasion as well, making four field goals against Washington State in 1993. He entered the NFL undrafted and signed with the San Francisco 49ers. He spent the 1995 and 1996 seasons with Rhein Fire of the World League in Dusseldorf, where he made four interceptions and was named first-team All-World League at free safety. He was also on a Buffalo Bills roster in the mid-1990s.

His one recorded NFL regular-season appearance came with San Francisco in 1997, a season for which Madden NFL 98 put him at a calculated 56. Torn knee cartilage that year ended his playing career. He is the younger brother of Tim Salmon, the 1993 American League Rookie of the Year. Greenway High School retired his football jersey in 2012.
