Ray Lucas: undrafted Rutgers QB who went 6-3 for the 1999 Jets

Raymond J. Lucas was born on August 6, 1972 in Harrison, New Jersey. He lettered four times at quarterback for Rutgers from 1992 to 1995 and left ranked fourth in school history with 43 touchdowns. He went undrafted, signed with New England in 1996 and appeared in two games, then followed Bill Parcells to the New York Jets in 1997 and threw his first NFL pass in that season's finale against Detroit.

Lucas played 15 games as a backup in 1998, a season Madden NFL 99 carried at a calculated 76. Madden NFL 2000 dropped him to a calculated 66 for 1999, the year a Week 1 injury to Vinny Testaverde eventually put him in the lineup. He started nine games, went 6-3 and threw for 1,678 yards with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 82 for 2000, when he made no starts and threw four interceptions without a touchdown.

He joined Miami in 2001 and started six games in 2002 after Jay Fiedler broke his thumb, including an October 20 loss to Buffalo in which he threw four interceptions and lost two fumbles; Madden NFL 03 rated him 65 for that season. Lucas played 55 games with 15 starts and threw for 3,029 yards, 18 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He was inducted into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
