A career backup who spent a year on a great team

Cary Conklin was a fourth-round quarterback out of Washington in 1990, just the big-armed prospect teams stash on the bench hoping he develops. He spent most of his career in Washington as a backup, threw a handful of passes when the starters went down, and finished with a single season in San Francisco in 1995 as a third-stringer behind Steve Young.

Madden's two cards of him barely register. The game gave him a 20 for the 1993 season in Washington, one of the lowest overalls it prints, and a 43 for his 1995 49ers year, the numbers of a deep reserve it had almost no reason to grade. There was no real player to measure, just an arm at the end of the bench.

Conklin threw for 560 yards and five touchdowns across seven career games, going 0-2 as a starter, before retiring after 1995. He was a career backup who happened to spend a year on a great team, a quarterback whose name survives only in transaction logs and old rosters. Madden's low grades are the whole of his record.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
