An Ole Miss tight end who caught a long one in Tampa and blocked in Dallas

Tyji Armstrong came out of Ole Miss by way of Iowa Central, a third-round pick of Tampa Bay in 1992 who started seven games as a rookie and caught an 81-yard touchdown against the Rams that hinted at a bigger career than he ended up having. His rookie year carried a private tragedy, his mother suffered a fatal heart attack while watching him play at Soldier Field, a weight no box score records.

The Madden cards track a tight end who never quite broke through. He opens at a 36 as a young Buccaneer, jumps to a 74 in Madden NFL 95 that is a pre-1997 awareness-inflation quirk rather than a real leap, then settles to a 59 and a 44 as the receiving work dried up. By the time he reached Dallas in 1996 he was a blocker, signed for his body rather than his hands, and the card's low 40s in that stretch are the honest read on his role.

Armstrong finished with fifty-three catches for 621 yards across eighty-seven games with Tampa Bay, Dallas and St. Louis, plus a later run in the XFL. His best football was his first, that flash of a rookie season in Tampa, and the rest was the grind of a movable tight end. The card's one high number is a glitch, and the player underneath it was a useful blocker who caught a few when asked.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
