Seven years of rotational work the game rated exactly that

Dennis Brown was a second-round pick out of Washington in 1990, and he spent his entire seven-year career doing rotational, unglamorous work on the San Francisco defensive line. He was a run-stuffer and part-time starter, a lineman who plays 110 games without ever making a highlight, and he was on the field for the Super Bowl XXIX champions in 1994.

Madden's grades for him are as modest and steady as the player: a 59 for the 1993 season, a 58 for 1994, a 69 for 1995, the small numbers of a solid contributor who was never a star. There was no arc to speak of, no spike and no collapse, just a competent interior lineman rated like one across three cards.

Brown finished with 24.5 sacks and a ring, then stayed close to the game as a Bay Area broadcaster covering the team he played for. He was exactly a player a dynasty needs and no one outside the building remembers, a rotational lineman who did his job for seven years. The grades never got excited about him, because there was never any reason to.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
