Leslie O'Neal: Chargers pass rusher, 132.5 career sacks
Leslie O'Neal was born on May 7, 1964 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and played college football at Oklahoma State, where he was a unanimous All-American in 1985 and a three-time first-team All-Big Eight selection. The San Diego Chargers drafted him eighth overall in 1986. He was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year after 12.5 sacks, including a team-record five against the Dallas Cowboys on November 16, 1986, then lost nearly two full seasons to a knee injury.
O'Neal returned on October 16, 1988 and matched his rookie sack total in 1989, earning the first of six Pro Bowl selections. Madden NFL 92 listed him at a calculated 95 for the 1991 season. He led the AFC with a career-high 17 sacks in 1992, led the Chargers in sacks every year from 1990 through 1995, and was named second-team All-Pro for 1990, 1992 and 1994; Madden NFL 95 had him at a calculated 88 for that last season.
He left San Diego as the franchise's career sacks leader with 105.5. He spent 1996 and 1997 with the St. Louis Rams and 1998 and 1999 with the Kansas City Chiefs, where Madden NFL 99 rated his 1998 season a calculated 87. O'Neal finished with 132.5 sacks over 13 seasons and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in March 2020.
