Kansas City spent the 21st pick of the 1984 draft on a tall Iowa tackle, and John Alt repaid it with thirteen seasons and 179 games in one uniform. He came into the league as a converted tight end with rare feet for a man his size, and by the early 1990s he was protecting the blind side for Marty Schottenheimer teams that leaned on Christian Okoye and Marcus Allen. Second-team All-Pro in 1990, he earned back-to-back Pro Bowl nods in 1992 and 1993 and later took his place in the Chiefs Hall of Honor.

That final 1996 Madden card lists him at 89, a fitting number for a veteran closing out his NFL run. Alt went home to Minnesota and coached high school offensive lines, and the bloodline kept producing: his son Joe followed him to left tackle and went fifth overall to the Chargers in the 2024 draft.
