Ray Horton Madden Career 1992-1993 - Peak 72 OVR

Ray Horton had two careers in football, and the second was bigger than the first. A second-round pick out of Washington in 1983, he spent a decade as a defensive back and punt returner for the Bengals and then the Cowboys, a solid, versatile piece who won a Super Bowl XXVII ring in Dallas and intercepted 19 passes along the way.

Madden has only two cards of him, both from his final Cowboys seasons, a 72 and a 49, with the noisy attribute values the old scale produced. His prime had come in Cincinnati, before the ratings tables began, so the game caught only the veteran tail of a good career.

Horton's larger legacy came on the sideline. He became one of the most respected defensive minds in the league, coaching defensive backs on Super Bowl-winning Pittsburgh staffs and running defenses as a coordinator for the Cardinals, Browns and Titans. The player was a good, unspectacular starter; the coach shaped defenses for two decades. Madden's two thin cards are a small record of the first career and no hint at all of the second.
