Denzel Ward announced himself on day one. In his 2018 debut against Pittsburgh, the rookie corner picked off two passes, and Cleveland knew the fourth overall pick was worth it. Ohio State had produced the highest-drafted Buckeye cornerback in two decades, and Ward made the Pro Bowl and All-Rookie team before the season was out.

He became the anchor of the Browns secondary, the man who took the opponent's top receiver and mostly won. In 2021 he ran an interception back 99 yards for a touchdown against Cincinnati. The next spring Cleveland made him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history at the time, a five-year deal worth more than $100 million, and he backed it with five Pro Bowl selections through 2025. A string of concussions early on was the one thing that occasionally kept him off the field.

His Madden path climbed almost without interruption. He debuted at an 80 in the 2018 edition, jumped to an 88 the next year, and reached a 92 in the 2022 game before holding at 90 in the most recent editions.
