Vernon came out of the University of Miami in the third round in 2012, 72nd overall, and by his second season he was dropping quarterbacks 11.5 times for the Dolphins. Four years in Miami built a reputation for a heavy, relentless bull rush, and in 2016 the Giants made him one of the highest-paid defensive players in the game.

He earned it. New York got a second-team All-Pro that first season, then steady production even as the scheme slid him between end and outside linebacker. A trade sent him to Cleveland in 2019, where he made his lone Pro Bowl as an injury replacement and later dropped Carson Wentz three times in a 2020 win to grab AFC Defensive Player of the Week. An Achilles tear in the final week of that season cut off his momentum, and he finished with roughly 54.5 sacks.

Madden was slow to notice him, listing a 66 in the 2012 edition and a 69 the next year before the 11.5-sack season pushed him to 80. The number peaked at 91 in the 2016 game after the Giants deal, then eased into the low 80s across his final seasons.
