Earl Thomas III was born on May 7, 1989 in Orange, Texas, and played high school football at West Orange-Stark. He was a consensus All-American at Texas and was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks 14th overall in 2010. He started all 16 games as a rookie free safety, a season Madden NFL 11 rated him 81.

Thomas made the first of seven Pro Bowls after the 2011 season and was named first-team All-Pro in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Madden NFL 13 rated him 91 for 2012. Seattle beat Denver 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII in February 2014, and Madden NFL 15 rated him 95 for the 2014 season.

He broke his tibia in December 2016 and missed the rest of that year. He broke his leg again in Week 4 of the 2018 season and gestured toward the Seattle sideline while being carted off, a season Madden NFL 19 rated him 95. He signed with Baltimore in March 2019, made his seventh Pro Bowl and was rated 95 in Madden NFL 20. The Ravens released him on August 23, 2020, two days after a training-camp fight with teammate Chuck Clark, and he did not play in the NFL again. He finished with 30 career interceptions.
