The German tackle who protected Brady on two titles
Sebastian Vollmer was born in Kaarst, Germany, and did not pick up a football until he was 14, which makes what he became slightly absurd. By way of the University of Houston, where he moved to left tackle after back surgery, he landed with New England as a second-round pick, 58th overall, in 2009. He anchored the right side of the Patriots line for eight seasons.
He earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2010 and won two Super Bowls in front of Tom Brady, XLIX over the Seahawks 28-24 and LI over the Falcons 34-28 in overtime, the 28-3 comeback. Injuries eventually wore him down, and he retired in 2017, later shedding 75 pounds and becoming a football voice on German television.
Madden charted the whole arc. He was a 62 as a rookie in the 2009 edition, then reached two separate peaks at 91, in the 2013 and 2015 games, bracketing his strongest run in New England before slipping to an 84 in his final rated year.
