A 49ers interior force undone off the field
Ray McDonald spent eight seasons wedged into the interior of San Francisco's defensive line, a third-round pick out of Florida in 2007 who grew into a starter on the fearsome 49ers fronts that reached Super Bowl XLVII. He was more disruptive than his box score, though he did post a career-high 5.5 sacks and 39 tackles in 2011.
His Madden ratings caught up with the team's rise, jumping from the low 70s to a peak of 92 in the 2012 edition, when San Francisco's defense ranked among the league's best. The 49ers released him in December 2014 after he was named in a sexual assault investigation, and Chicago cut him the following spring amid further arrests; he did not play again. The talent was real, and so was the reason the football stopped.
