Ted Ginn Jr. was born on April 12, 1985, in Cleveland, Ohio, and played high school football at Glenville for his father, Ted Ginn Sr. He caught 135 passes for 1,943 yards at Ohio State from 2004 to 2006 and was taken by the Miami Dolphins with the ninth overall pick in the 2007 draft. As a rookie he had 34 receptions for 420 yards and returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown against Philadelphia on November 18, 2007, a season Madden NFL 08 rated 79.

Ginn set career highs of 56 catches and 790 yards in 2008, then was traded to the San Francisco 49ers on April 16, 2010. In the 2011 season opener against Seattle he returned a kickoff 102 yards and a punt 55 yards for touchdowns within 59 seconds and totalled 268 return yards; Madden NFL 12 rated that season 72.

He played for Carolina in 2013 and Arizona in 2014 before returning to the Panthers, starting 13 games in 2015 as Carolina reached Super Bowl 50, a season rated 75 in Madden NFL 16. He signed with the New Orleans Saints in March 2017 and was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury on October 18, 2018, a season Madden NFL 19 rated 82. Ginn played six games for the Chicago Bears in 2020 and announced his retirement on July 16, 2021, with 412 receptions for 5,742 yards, 33 receiving touchdowns and 9,523 return yards.
