Stanford All-American safety whose knees kept betraying him
Clevan Williams went by Tank, and at Stanford he became the first defensive back in school history to earn national first-team honors, in 2001. Tennessee took him 45th overall in the 2002 draft and plugged him in at strong safety right away. His card reflected a fast rise, from a rookie 65 to 82 in the 2003 edition and a peak 89 in Madden 2004, when he looked like a fixture in the Titans secondary.
Then his knees gave out. A 2004 injury cost him time, a shattered kneecap in Minnesota in 2006 followed, and another severe knee injury in New England's 2008 training camp cut the career short. His overalls held in the high 80s through 2005 before sliding to 75 by the 2007 edition. He played his last snaps for the Patriots and later returned to Stanford as a defensive quality control analyst.
