Heath Shuler was born on December 31, 1971 in Bryson City, North Carolina. He played at Tennessee, threw for 2,354 yards and 25 touchdowns in 1993, was named SEC Player of the Year and finished second to Charlie Ward in the Heisman Trophy voting. Washington selected him third overall in the 1994 NFL draft, and he signed a seven-year, $19.25 million contract after holding out of training camp.
Shuler started eight games as a rookie and five in 1995 while competing with seventh-round pick Gus Frerotte, and he threw five interceptions in a 19-16 loss to Arizona. Madden NFL 95 carried a calculated 76 overall for his 1994 season, and Madden NFL 96 carried a calculated 69 for 1995. He did not start in 1996 and was traded to New Orleans after the season for two draft picks.
He started nine games for the Saints in 1997 and injured his foot, which required two operations; Madden NFL 98 carried a calculated 72 for that season. He missed 1998, signed with Oakland, re-injured the foot in training camp and was released. He finished with 3,691 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and 33 interceptions in 22 starts. He worked in real estate and represented North Carolina's 11th congressional district as a Democrat from 2007 to 2013.
