Amp Lee Madden Career 1994-2000 - Peak 86 OVR

Amp Lee came out of Florida State as a second-round pick of the 49ers in 1992, a change-of-pace back who did his best work catching passes rather than carrying the ball. He spent two years in San Francisco as a third-down specialist before moving on, and made a nine-year career out of the one skill that always keeps a running back employed: reliable hands out of the backfield.

Madden rated his 49ers time modestly, a 49 for the 1993 season on the old scale, the grade of a situational back buried on a deep roster. The number climbed later, peaking at an 86 for the 1998 season with the Rams, once he had established himself as a receiving weapon catching sixty and seventy passes a year. The game valued him more as a veteran specialist elsewhere than it ever did as a young 49er.

Lee finished with more than 3,000 receiving yards and 15 receiving touchdowns across stops with the 49ers, Vikings, Rams and Eagles, a pass-catching back before the position was fashionable. He was never a feature runner, and never tried to be. Madden's grades, low in San Francisco and higher on the road, tracked a career that was always about the one thing he did well.
