Roman Phifer Madden Career 1992-2005 - Peak 90 OVR
Eleven years to a first ring, then three with the Patriots
Roman Phifer played 211 games and waited until his eleventh season to win anything. The Rams took him 31st overall in 1991 out of UCLA, and for eight years in Los Angeles and St. Louis he piled up tackles on teams that rarely mattered in January.
Then the back half of his career turned golden. After two seasons with the Jets, he signed with New England and won three Super Bowls in four years, XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX, sliding around the front seven for Bill Belichick as the scheme demanded. He finished with 1,134 tackles, 29 sacks, and 11 interceptions, and never once made a Pro Bowl, going as an alternate four times instead.
His Madden numbers run backward from most careers. He opens as a 90 in the 1996 edition, near the height of his powers as a Ram, dips to a 66 in the 2001 game, then climbs back to 87 in the 2004 and 2005 editions once he was a trusted veteran on a champion.
