A 46 and a 66 bracket the whole career

Keith Henderson came out of Georgia as a third-round pick in 1989 and spent four seasons as a big back at the bottom of the San Francisco depth chart. Behind Roger Craig and Tom Rathman he carried the ball 13 times in his first two years, and collected a Super Bowl ring as a rookie when the 49ers beat Denver in XXIV. Madden NFL '92 rated him a 46, the grade of a 220-pounder who had done nothing with the ball yet.

He got a real chance in 1991 and took it, running 137 times for 561 yards as the closest thing the team had to a lead back that fall. It was enough to move the number: Madden '93 raised him to a 66, the best and last rating of his career. He was never much of a receiver, with 42 catches in all, and never a threat the game needed to fear. San Francisco traded him to Minnesota during the 1992 season, he gained 150 rushing yards split between the two teams, and he was out of the league by the end of the year. Two Madden cards, a 46 and a 66, bracket the whole of it.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
