Roger Craig: 1,000/1,000 in 1985, Hall of Fame Class of 2026

Roger Craig was born on July 10, 1960 in Preston, Mississippi, and grew up in Davenport, Iowa. He played college football at Nebraska, rushing for 2,446 yards in three seasons, and the San Francisco 49ers drafted him in the second round, 49th overall, in 1983.

In Super Bowl XIX in January 1985 he scored three touchdowns, the first player to do so in the game. The following season he became the first player to gain 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 receiving in the same year, running for 1,050 yards and leading the NFL with 92 catches for 1,016. He rushed for a career-high 1,502 yards in 1988, was a first-team All-Pro and won AP Offensive Player of the Year. San Francisco won three Super Bowls during his eight years there.

Craig signed with the Los Angeles Raiders in 1991 and led them in rushing with 590 yards; Madden NFL 92 listed him at a calculated 53 for that season. He spent his last two years with the Minnesota Vikings, and Madden NFL 93 put him at a calculated 69 for 1992, when he ran for 416 yards. He retired after 1993 with 8,189 rushing yards, 566 receptions and 73 touchdowns. Craig was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the Class of 2026.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
