The Lion who shaved his head and sat out for his wife

Chris Spielman played middle linebacker like the position owed him money. A two-time All-American at Ohio State and the 1987 Lombardi Award winner, he was drafted 29th overall by Detroit in 1988 and immediately became the heartbeat of the defense. He piled up 195 tackles in 1994 alone and still holds the Lions franchise record with 1,138 career tackles. Four Pro Bowls followed across his eight seasons in Detroit before stops in Buffalo and Cleveland.

His defining act came off the field. In 1998 Spielman walked away from football for a full season to care for his wife Stefanie during her fight with breast cancer, shaving his own head in solidarity as she went through chemotherapy. Stefanie survived several bouts before the disease returned and took her life in 2009. The couple's foundation has raised millions for cancer research.

The Madden record here is a single snapshot rather than an arc. The 1996 edition rated Spielman a 93, capturing the throwback tackler at full force in a Bills uniform, one of the loudest numbers a linebacker could carry in that era.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
