The game missed his best year in Cleveland
Thane Gash was a seventh-round safety out of East Tennessee State whose best football came in Cleveland, not San Francisco. He started for the Browns during their 1989 AFC Championship run, intercepting three passes that year and returning two of them for touchdowns, a real playmaker on a team that came within a game of the Super Bowl. Then he joined the 49ers for the 1992 and 1993 seasons as a veteran presence in the secondary.
Madden has exactly one card of him, and it is from the wrong end of his career. The game rated Gash a 63 for the 1992 season, his first in San Francisco, with a tackle rating of 86 that at least caught the one thing he did well and an awareness score of nothing at all. His actual peak, those two pick-sixes in Cleveland in 1989, came before the game was keeping track of him, so the number you get is a middling safety on the back nine rather than the ballhawk he briefly was.
Gash played 64 games and intercepted four passes in the NFL before his career ran out in San Francisco. One 63-rated card is all Madden made of him, and like a lot of the men on the edges of a great roster, his best days happened somewhere the game was not looking.
