Derek Stingley Jr. carries a heavy football name. His grandfather Darryl Stingley was the Patriots receiver paralyzed on a hit in 1978. Derek Jr. arrived at LSU in 2019 and started for an undefeated national champion, leading the SEC with six interceptions and making consensus All-American as a freshman.
Houston drafted him third overall in 2022, tied for the highest a cornerback has ever gone. Injuries and a rebuilding roster made the early returns quiet, but in 2024 he started all 17 games, grabbed five interceptions with a career-high 18 pass breakups and earned first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. The Texans made him the highest-paid corner in league history the following spring on a three-year, $90 million extension.
