The Outback Bowl hit that made him first overall
The play that made Jadeveon Clowney famous came in the January 2013 Outback Bowl, when he blew up a Michigan handoff, knocked the helmet off running back Vincent Smith, forced the fumble and recovered it himself. It won an ESPY and helped make him the first overall pick of the 2014 draft.
Houston got a South Carolina defender who moved like a much smaller man, but microfracture knee surgery wiped out most of his rookie year. He grew into a disruptive force anyway, earning three straight Pro Bowls from 2016 through 2018 on the strength of tackles for loss and quarterback pressures more than raw sack totals. He later played for Seattle, Tennessee, Cleveland, Baltimore and Carolina, posting a 9.5-sack season for the Ravens in 2023.
The ratings rode that path. He was an 83 in the 2014 edition on draft hype, then fell to 78 in the 2015 game after the knee. As he found his footing, the number climbed to a 92 in the 2019 edition, the highest mark of his career.
