The Raiders sideline-to-sideline linebacker who piled up tackles
Oakland spent a third-round pick on Kirk Morrison in 2005, and the San Diego State product paid it back in volume. He posted 116 tackles as a rookie and never really slowed down, following with 128, 120, and then 135 in 2008, a figure that ranked fifth in the NFL. In 2009 he tied for sixth with 133 stops while playing much of the year with a dislocated elbow, which tells you plenty about how he approached the middle of the defense.
Before the pros he was a two-time Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time first-team all-conference selection, a decorated resume for a player on losing Raiders teams that rarely got him national attention. He finished his career with a season in Jacksonville and two in Buffalo.
Madden treated his rise the way Oakland fans did, with growing respect. He opened as a 73 in the 2005 edition, leapt to 87 and 88 in the next two years, and topped out at a 92 in the 2008 game after that fifth-ranked tackle season. The number drifted down to 79 by the 2011 and 2012 editions as the miles added up.
