The weight-room safety who ran downhill in St. Louis
Adam Archuleta reached the NFL as a physical specimen, a converted linebacker out of Arizona State whose training regimen became something of a legend before he ever played a down. The Rams took him 20th overall in 2001 and turned him loose in Lovie Smith's Cover 2, where his aggression fit. He strung together three straight seasons of 100-plus tackles from 2002 to 2004 and finished with 530 tackles, 18 sacks and four interceptions. His signature play came on a Monday night in 2004, when he scooped a fumble and rumbled 93 yards for a touchdown against Tampa Bay.
Washington made him one of the highest-paid safeties in football in 2006, and the fit never took. He was gone after a season, spent 2007 in Chicago, and washed out in Oakland.
His Madden number traced that same rise and fall. A modest 74 as a rookie in the 2001 edition climbed steadily to a 92 in the 2004 game, right as his tackle production topped out, before sliding back to the low 80s across his final editions in 2007 and 2008.
