Tim Couch: Browns' 1999 No. 1 Pick, 11,131 Career Passing Yards

Tim Couch was born on July 31, 1977 in Hyden, Kentucky, and played at Kentucky from 1996 to 1998, where he was a consensus All-American and SEC Player of the Year in 1998. The Cleveland Browns took him first overall in 1999, making him the first pick of the reactivated franchise. He replaced Ty Detmer in the second game of his rookie season. Madden NFL 2000 carried a calculated 75 for that season.

Couch missed the final nine games of 2000 with a broken thumb, and Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 83 for that season, the highest of his career. Madden NFL 02 rated him 79 for 2001, when he started all 16 games. In 2002 he threw for 2,842 yards and 18 touchdowns and led Cleveland to a 9-7 record and a playoff berth, and Madden NFL 03 listed him at 81. On December 8, 2002 he beat Jacksonville on a last-play touchdown pass to Quincy Morgan, then broke his leg in the regular-season finale.

Kelly Holcomb held the starting job in 2003, and the Browns released Couch on June 10, 2004. He signed with Green Bay, required rotator cuff surgery, and was cut before the season. He finished with 1,025 completions on 1,714 attempts for 11,131 yards, 64 touchdowns and 67 interceptions, all with Cleveland. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2024.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
