Bobby Hoying: Ohio State record-setter, Eagles and Raiders QB

Robert Carl Hoying was born on September 20, 1972, in St. Henry, Ohio, and played college football at Ohio State, finishing with 498 completions and 57 touchdown passes, both school records. He won the 1995 Draddy Trophy as the top scholar-athlete in college football. The Philadelphia Eagles drafted him in the third round, 85th overall, in 1996, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at 12 for that rookie season.

Hoying took over as the Eagles' starter at midseason in 1997 and threw 11 touchdown passes, four of them in a 44-42 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on November 30, 1997. Madden NFL 98 carried a calculated 53 for the 1997 season. He started seven games in 1998, threw nine interceptions and no touchdown passes, and was benched; Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated 83 for 1998, the highest figure the series gave him.

Philadelphia traded him to the Oakland Raiders in August 1999, where he backed up Rich Gannon. With Gannon injured, Hoying played in the AFC Championship Game in January 2001, a 16-3 loss to Baltimore. Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 74 for the 2000 season, his last with regular-season appearances, and a severe elbow injury ended his career. He finished with 2,544 passing yards and 11 touchdowns in 22 games. Ohio State inducted him into its Varsity O Hall of Fame in 2008.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
