Danny Kanell was born on November 21, 1973 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He played four years at Florida State, backing up Charlie Ward on the 1993 national championship team before starting in 1994 and 1995, and finished with 6,372 yards and 57 touchdown passes. He was ACC Player of the Year in 1995. The New York Giants drafted him in the fourth round in 1996, and he made his NFL debut that season.

Kanell started the last ten games of 1997 and threw for 1,740 yards with eleven touchdowns as the Giants won the NFC East. He went 13 of 32 for 199 yards in a 23-22 playoff loss to Minnesota on December 27, 1997. Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated 81 overall for the 1998 season, his highest figure. He started all ten games he played in 1998, threw for 1,303 yards, and was replaced by Kent Graham.

The Giants released him to sign Kerry Collins. He spent 1999 and 2000 behind Chris Chandler in Atlanta, completing 99 of 200 passes for 1,117 yards; Madden NFL 2000 carried a calculated 75 for 1999. He was out of the league in 2001, a season for which Madden NFL 02 listed 55, and played four Arena League games in 2002. He started two games for Denver in 2003 and finished with 5,129 passing yards and 31 touchdowns.
