Jim Miller was born on February 9, 1971, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and played college football at Michigan State from 1990 to 1993, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors as a senior. The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him in the sixth round, 178th overall, in 1994. He spent the spring of 1995 with the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World League and won the World Bowl.
Miller appeared in five games for Pittsburgh across 1995 and 1996, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at 53 overall for the 1996 season. He signed with the Chicago Bears in December 1998 and won the starting job in 1999, throwing for 1,242 yards in five games before a four-game suspension under the NFL substance-abuse policy. Madden NFL 2000 carried a calculated 69 overall for 1999, and Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 77 for the 2000 season.
He started 13 games in 2001 and passed for 2,299 yards and 13 touchdowns. On January 19, 2002, Miller separated his shoulder in the divisional playoff against Philadelphia after completing three of five passes for 23 yards. He threw for 1,944 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2002, a season for which Madden NFL 03 listed him at 74 overall. Miller received a Super Bowl ring with the 2004 New England Patriots and finished with 6,387 passing yards, 36 touchdowns and 31 interceptions in 37 games.
