Joe Johnson was born on July 11, 1972 in Cleveland, Ohio, played college football at Louisville, and was drafted by the New Orleans Saints with the 13th overall pick in 1994. He started 14 games as a rookie and recorded one sack. Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 80 for that 1994 season.

His sack totals climbed to 5.5 in 1995, 7.5 in 1996 and 8.5 in 1997. He had 7.0 in 1998 and made his first Pro Bowl, a season for which Madden NFL 99 listed him at a calculated 83. A knee injury cost him all of 1999. He returned in 2000 with a career-high 12 sacks, a second Pro Bowl and the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year award, and Madden NFL 2001 rated him 85 for that season.

He recorded nine sacks in 2001, his last year in New Orleans, then signed with Green Bay as a free agent. Injuries held him to five games in 2002 and six in 2003, and he had two sacks for the Packers. Madden NFL 03 rated him 92 for the 2002 season. Johnson played 117 games and recorded 52.5 career sacks, 50.5 of them for New Orleans, and the Saints inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2007.
